  • The use of ocean-related recycled materials in Samsung mobile devices will help improve Marine biodiversity and fulfill the ESG mandate.
  • “By extending them to automotive electronics and textile materials, we seek to imagine sustainable solutions for the planet.”

Seoul, South Korea, March 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — With growing calls for marine protection and the sustainable planet, Hanwha Solutions has joined the foray by working with Samsung Electronics to upcycle discarded fishing nets and incorporate them into Samsung’s latest Galaxy devices.

The company’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Hanwha Compound, said it supplied Samsung with eco-friendly materials made from recycled polyamide collected from discarded fishing nets. They are integrated into key components of the newest Galaxy smartphones, PCs and tablets, such as the Galaxy S22 series S Pen key holder and inner cover, the Galaxy Tab S8 series inner holder holders and the Galaxy Book2 Pro series touchpad. and interior support.

Due to long-term exposure to seawater and UV rays, polyamide fishing nets become too fragile to be recycled directly. In its collaboration with Samsung, Hanwha Compound has applied its advanced material blending technology to improve the performance of polyamide, making it optimized for electronic device applications in the form of small pallets. Its endurance and environmental friendliness have been certified by Underwriter Laboratories, a safety organization that sets industry-wide standards for new products.

Going forward, Hanwha Compound will intensify its efforts to expand the range of environmentally friendly products in its plastics business, given the growing threat to marine biodiversity posed by abandoned fishing nets and other plastics related to the ocean.

“Extensive research and development is underway to recycle marine litter and develop environmentally friendly materials,” said the CEO of Hanwha Compound. Lim Sang-he. “By extending them to automotive electronics and textile materials, we seek to imagine sustainable solutions for the planet.”
